Witch Trick of the month

I've said it before, but I'll repeat myself. Avoid black text, unless you're making a b/w graphic or a piece that has already black tones in it. If not, text will look odd and out of place. When picking a color for it, the best you can do is picking it with the color selector. Then, alter it if needed (make it lighter or darker). Most of times it works wonders., mainly because you're using a color that it's already in the palette of your graphic.

There was really little participation on this event. In fact, with each new event I create, the participation becomes lesser and lesser. Which I don't really understand, being I celebrate having more watchers. Tea & Cookies - Designer Commandments 

1. You shall not copy others.
2. You shall not steal other people's work.
3. You shall credit where credit is due.
4. You shall get out of your comfort box and experiment.
5. You shall practice and work hard to improve.
6. You shall accept constructive criticism.
7. You shall not do things just because they're trendy.
8. You shall not repeat your designs over and over again—innovate.
9. You shall respect the members of the community.
10. You shall enjoy what you're doing!

1. Copying =/= being inspired by someone. Imitating is not a form of flattery, believe me. It's just a way for annoying/bothering/making someone angry. Do not copy others. Just don't.
2. Duh. Respect people's rules. If you download a psd, for example, and change/add a layer to it, that doesn't make it yours. If you use a psd graphic and only change a model and/or the text, that doesn't make the composition yours either. Plagiarism is not cool, it's a crime. Also, don't just repack things and ask for credits (while disregarding the original creator's rules and never mentioning while at it.) 
3. Making resources takes time. Coming up with new ideas, gathering/creating materials to make them, making them and then making previews of them... I assure you, it's a hell of a process. And people around here do it for free, mostly. The least you can do is giving the appropriate credits. It takes you a minute, if not less.
4. Experimenting is the key to success. It helps you develop your style, and explore it further.
5. Getting better at something ain't magic. You need to work for it. So don't expect to be proficient after making two graphics. Don't get frustrated if it gets time improving.
6. Sharing different points of view may help you to improve your work. And outsider's look is (almost) always helpful!
7. Accommodate trends to your style, instead of trying to accommodate your style to trends. Trends don't last long, but your style will.
8. Making the same compositions won't get you far. Vary. Innovate. Push yourself to the next level.
9. You don't need me to explain this, aye? Treat people fairly. We need a united community.
10. Making graphics (or anything design related) shouldn't be stress inducing. If it is, take a pause from it. Or try finding a different approach to it. You're supposed to be doing something you enjoy!

Tea & Cookies - We Ran Out Of Cookies!

I haven't been feeling motivated enough to write this section, so I'll post some basic points regarding storytelling in graphics.

Before making the graphic

• At least have a vague idea of what you're intending to make. It will make it easier when it comes to picking the elements you'll be using.
• Do not force yourself to make something you don't want to make. DO. NOT.
• Having an idea of what you want to make doesn't mean you can't change it while you're working on it. Don't be rigid. Flexibility and versatility are a must.
• Get resources according to the story you want to tell. Do not pick them randomly. Do not place stocks/textures just because. They have to be related both to the concept your portraying and the other elements you'll be using. If not, the composition won't look natural and won't flow.

Finishing a graphic

• For the love of your editing software... DO NOT OVER FILTER. Do not ruin your graphic by adding too much blur/sharpen/Topaz. It doesn't make it look good. It just makes it hard to look at. Besides, the more Topaz you add, the more details you erase. They become melted thingies.
• PNG format is your friend.
• If you're still not sure about the graphic, or something seems off, leave it like it is and come back to it a couple of hours later. Or a day later. Or a few days later. You'll look at it from a different perspective and that will help you point out what's not working out.
• Do yourself a favor—save an editable version of the graphic. Just in case.

Avoid these disgraces

It's in jpg. There's no flow in the composition (mainly because the models are all "touching" the top of the banner. They function like some kind of interruption right there, bugging the eye. Also, a window in the right, stairs in the left???? Consistency where????)


Look at that lovely washed out look thanks to filtering. And with lovely, I mean it makes me wanna die.


There's not a single thing right in this. The scattered text, the lack of a clear focal point, the awkward blending. FIFTY SHADES OF NO.


Remember what I said about not mixing indoor with outdoor images? Yeah, well. Prime example.


Awkward blending & placement + shit ton of Topaz = KILL IT WITH FIRE.
